There's many very rare items that are terrible partially because of str, dex requirements. The fact that no caster wants to put a lot into mana except for energy shield builds is strange.
The fact that melee characters don't want to focus strength and want only enough to equip gear is strange. If fact, having played other rpgs lead me to distribute stats completely incorrectly. Sorry, but whilst amazing as far as arpgs go, D2 is not intuitive at all. My first playthrough I made some probably random skill Druid and couldn't make any progress at all in Act 4 nightmare. Let them have fun with bone spirit, bone prison, armageddon, zeal, whatever else, before sending them down the rabbit hole of optimal mf%, millions of LK/trav runs, and the like. Don't take that away from new players, just yet. To seasoned players, consider the first time getting zapped by rakanishu, getting whacked by griswald, getting stuck at duriel/maggot lair, etc. For now, enjoy the atmosphere, music, dialogues, gameplay, frustration, and everything great that comes with the game. The end-game is about grinding for gears and min-maxing there's lots of time (maybe another 20 years) for that. You only get to experience it for the first time once, play it blind! There's lots of time for guides/builds/optimization if/when you inevitably get frustrated or want to take it to the next level. I think D2 is one of if not the best ARPGs of all time, and the fact that it's been played nonstop for 20+ years is a testament to this. Past few days I've seen some posts from folks who have never played D2 asking for advice, and seasoned players suggesting reading guides etc.
